Elliptical Machine vs. Treadmill

The discussions on elliptical machine vs. treadmill have been prevalent for some time. Both machines are beneficial for a workout program, but serve different purposes. Most people are interested in knowing which machine burns more calories. An elliptical trainer comes with a smooth, natural motion machine. Its foot pedals always remain in contact with the feet of a walker. A treadmill offers to a user walking, running, and jogging on a flat or inclined surface. Moreover, it causes a high impact on hips, knees, and ankles. An elliptical machine has a low impact on joints and back.

The difference

As far as the issue of burning calories is concerned, various studies and practical exercises have shown that a treadmill burns more calories for a person during workouts. A treadmill bears more weight than that of elliptical trainers. Generally, a user can choose different intensity levels for both treadmills and elliptical trainers. But with an elliptical machine, a user can work both upper and lower body, and efficiently increase his heart rate at a faster pace, which burns more calories. Obviously, more weight loss and fat burning takes place in case of an elliptical machine. It is observed that an elliptical machine workout for 20 minutes achieves results, which a treadmill accomplishes in 35 to 40 minutes.

An elliptical trainer provides benefits of biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Further, it offers an extended circular motion and makes feet move backward and forward around in an oval pattern. On the other hand, a person can walk, run, and jog in the same spot on a conveyor belt of a treadmill. Treadmills were introduced in market much earlier that elliptical trainers, and are very popular for cardio exercises. They also offer much variety in workouts than what the elliptical machines offer. A user can increase the incline on a treadmill, and target his lower body muscles more directly. An elliptical trainer, as compared to a treadmill, offers more grace and less stress during exercise. And many people are of opinion that an elliptical trainer is less boring that what a treadmill is. Treadmills have more exposure in markets, as compared to that of elliptical trainers.

It is a good idea for a user to exercise regularly, lose weight, and be healthier, no matter what type of machine he chooses. He can plan workouts on either of the machines or on both.
