I don’t need a home boxing gym but there are plenty of people who might. In the old days, a punching bag could be found hanging in the garage or on the back porch. Boxer training was recognized as a serious whole body fitness program.

In a sense, the home boxing gym is a nostalgic look at earlier times. Warriors trained for sports when there was no warfare. Boxers trained periodically and then strenuously for six to ten weeks before an actual ring engagement.

Taking The Boxing Gym Home With You

The proverbial boxing gym was home for opportunity and hope. Physically unattractive and typically made of brick and mortar, an old brick building on a dimly lit street remains the prevailing image that comes to mind. And out of hundreds of aspiring athletes and boxers, maybe one or two were able to fight their way to a chance at the big ring and the elusive championship. Still, the allure is strong and continues even today.

Modern gyms with ultra exclusive electronic fitness equipment still offer a boxing area with simplistic equipment – punching bag, leather medicine ball, treadmill and jump rope. You see, the elements of boxer training were pretty inclusive and provided for strength, cardiovascular health and endurance. It has become apparent that all these were good, so it is natural that the idea of a home boxing gym might catch on, even after boxing as a sport has declined somewhat.

Fight Club

When I was a teenager I worked a summer at Delaware Park, a thoroughbred race track. On Tuesday nights there were fights – boxing matches for amateurs. Several jockeys participated, even though I thought it might be counterproductive to being fit to ride the next day. I guess other factors need to be considered.

Not just strength, but also the perception of strength, endurance and determination are under scrutiny here at ringside. Popularity might gain some cheering for you, but performance factors still prevail; one still has to fight one’s own battles. Of course there are always payoffs and acting, but that’s wrestling.

Conclusion

I may not need one, but the home boxing gym has a legitimate place in both physical training areas and in sports fitness. It’s one of the only sports out there that uses the entire body, every single muscle, which is important for any home exercise program. I just ask that you don’t use me as your punching bag!
