Safety is the most important thing to consider, along with the motor, when buying treadmills. It is not fun to discuss safety, but you will wish you had done it if you end up in the emergency room after a nasty fall. Believe it or not you can actually sustain some pretty nasty injuries as a result of a misstep on a treadmill. By considering a few basic safety features you can prevent these unfortunate events.

This is especially true in households with children. There are two main safety features found in treadmills and so when you buy one, don’t forget to check for these: the safety key and the emergency off button. This way if the child is in trouble then he or she can simply pull on the safety switch or push a button to be released from the onslaught of the walking belt.

Some treadmills offer only the safety key. Others offer both the emergency button and the safety key. It is best that you get a treadmill that offers both of these. If not, then weigh down the merits of each feature carefully before buying. You may not see a reason for both until it is too late and you have already made a purchase that you can’t get out of.

A safety key treadmill requires that the key be in place to turn the treadmill on. It usually has a way to attach the key to the runner so that if the runner falls or gets too far away, the key will pull out and stop the treadmill. The emergency off button on the other hand is just a red button that you can push to turn off the treadmill immediately.

The warranty is the best thing to save you from potential harm, be it more financial safety than physical safety. If your treadmill malfunctions which is possible regardless of the make and model it is good to be able to replace it or have it repaired. Check your limits and use your warranty wisely to protect your treadmill investment.

If you have an opportunity to purchase a treadmill that does not hold all of these features then it is not worth purchasing regardless of the price. Enjoy your safe workout experience!
